While she is busy getting ready for her annual cooking contest/author event at her cookbook and cookware store, Bonnie Emerson, daughter of a former U.S. president, finds the body of a woman near a stream on her property. When Bonnie’s tires are slashed, her father hires a private security company. When she is shot at, he calls in the Secret Service and the author’s agent threatens to cancel her appearance. But it could be worse. If Cookbooktoberfest goes on with a killer on the loose, they might all be in danger.
Cookbooktoberfest and the lives of Bonnie and her family are all in jeopardy unless Bonnie can — with or without the Secret Service — find the killer.
Filled with cooking and cookbook lore, Cinnamon Girl is the first in a series of VILLAGE COOKS mysteries.

Sometimes a gamble on a new writer pays off handsomely as it does with this mystery. Set in a small town in rural New Jersey I really enjoyed meeting Bonnie Emerson and her family and friends. I was quickly drawn into the world of Wilmington and Bonnie's shop Village Cooks and there were enough red herrings to keep me guessing. I felt there was a real depth in the back story of many of the characters and the small details of every day life added to an overall satisfying narrative. Although there were many characters in the story they were well drawn and I didn't need to refer to the cast list at the beginning of the book. I particularly enjoyed the discussion about cook books titles many of which I recognised but a few I have noted for future reference. The only small quibble I have was a couple of editing problems. Early on Bonnie makes two mentions of her wedding - one in the White House and one in her backyard (hmm?). This was not enough to keep me from giving this 4 stars and I will look forward to the next episode.Product details

Cinnamon Girl Village Cooks Mystery Book 1 edition by Valerie Horowitz Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Ms. Horowitz has penned a delightful story which interweaves an intriguing murder, sleuthing, cookbooks and cooking lore, and a broad range of true characters. She has a fine ear for dialogue and pacing, and she has successful evoked the charming, rural flavor of too-seldom known parts of New Jersey. At the same time, she draws the reader into her world, and one feels that one is there in the room with the characters. The mystery keeps one switching one's guesses as to whodunnit, and it's a great read. I only hope that some day Ms. Horowitz will see fit to write some more Village Cooks mysteries!
Being an individual who cooks as infrequently as can be arranged, and lists mysteries as a less favorite reading category, I was astonished to have so immensely enjoyed reading Valerie Horowitz's Cinnamon Girl A Village Cook's Mystery. For her first published writing Ms. Horowitz has succeeded in creating an engrossing adventure within the familiarity of her well-developed characters inhabiting the homey New Jersey setting for this unexpected and suspenseful account of death and discovery. The author is adept at character development within this genre and has enlivened her work with anecdotal gastronomical accompaniment that even Julia Childs would have coveted on her night stand reading pile. I for one, found myself invested in the recipes and their charming interlude into the homes and lives of those they immortalized. So looking forward to further adventures with Bonnie Emerson
I've been reading a LOT of culinary mysteries and this is a recent favorite. Well-developed characters, a plot that kept me guessing, the familiar locale (I live in NJ), and good recipes from trusted professional sources (i.e. real cookbook authors) set this one apart. Now I am impatient for her next one!
Excellent read. Couldnt put it down. I read it in a day. I love the recipes. I would highly recommend.
Wow, there are so many characters in this book, it's a little hard to keep up with. From the beginning, you are given a list of the characters, but REALLY, how could the reader possibly remember them. As far as the overall story flows, it's ok. I like the main character Bonnie, and love the kitchen/cookbook store that she owns. As I was reading I could really get a good feel for the store and thought, sounds like a great place that any cook would love to visit, browse and shop at.
There is so much to find in Cinnamon Girl besides a puzzle and a great story. I really enjoyed the intimacy of the heroines daily life and thoughts along with the descriptions of her house, bookstore and cooking. Valerie Horowitz has the ability to make you feel that you are right there on the spot. All through out the book there are hints about good cookbooks, cookbook talk, cooking talk, book talk. It is very satisfying for a mystery and cookbook reader like me. Her characters are finely realized and memorable. You want to be their friends, and they are recognizable.
Another layer of delight is added with every chapter heading. A quote about cooking from the most usual and unusual people. Groucho Marx! Humphery Bogart?
Valeria Horowitz has given us a fine plot, sophisticated, not cloying or folksy, but like the best of the classic English village mystery writers. A very good read! When is the next one?
Cinnamon Girl has all of the right ingredients for a good cozy mystery. I found it reminiscent of Susan Wittig Albert’s China Bayles’ series, a particular favorite of mine.
Bonnie Emerson and her coworker, Sally, are likeable, and what’s more, believable, even though Bonnie is the daughter of the former President of the United States. And her shop, Village Cooks, is every foodie’s dream. I was salivating. But beyond Cinnamon Girl’s appeal to foodies, I’d say its primary draw is those who love books and in particular, cookbooks. I found myself exclaiming over and over, “I have that one! Oh, I have that one!” and wanting to revisit those I haven’t taken down from my shelves for some time.
The plot is not secondary to the cookbook talk though. It’s interesting and draws you in, keeping you guessing. And not to give too much away, but for cat lovers, there’s also a very humane, and I don’t think very often seen, aside between Bonnie, Sally, and the shop’s resident cat, Mrs. Beaton, which was incredibly touching.
All in all, lovers of cozies, cookbooks, and a well-turned plot will find themselves eagerly turning the pages of Cinnamon Girl.
