A 'must read' for anyone who has been hurt or let down by church or its leaders.

It's 1990 and in a town in Wales a woman is undergoing a 2 year exorcism by a Free Church minister with devastating consequences. Twenty years later, in a nearby village, another woman goes through almost the same experience of exorcism, for the same period of 2 years. This time the 'exorcist' is an ordained Anglican priest. What, on earth, was going on?

This book offers a fascinating and unique discussion of modern exorcism based on the author's personal experience. It also tells the story of Julia who, like the author, underwent a series of major exorcisms over a two year period with serious consequences to mental and physical health. Both of them could have died. Incredibly, the exorcisms were almost certainly completely unnecessary as neither woman was possessed.

An initial discussion about whether demons even exist is intelligently approached with constant reference to scripture, psychology, and a large helping of plain common sense. The same sensible exploration of the idea of 'demon possession' leads to a fascinating insight into the psychology of the author and Julia. What were the signs and symptoms leading to a diagnosis of demon possession? What was going on during exorcisms lasting for up to seven hours? Why was psychiatric help and support not sought as a matter of urgency? Why were both ladies becoming progressively worse?

Interspaced throughout the book are italicised journeys into the very heart of the exorcisms. What does an exorcist do and say? How did both women react during the exorcisms? What, exactly, was happening?

The middle of the book is devoted to the author's convincing arguments that neither she nor Julia were possessed in the first place, hence the exorcisms were unnecessary. This is fascinating, profound and, surprisingly, a comfort and a joy to read.

The latter part of the book explores the theology, spiritual status and psychology of both exorcists. Why did they do what they did? The reasons put forward for their behaviour are thought provoking, plausible and perhaps controversial. The author makes no bones about the fact that pastoral abuse is wrong and needs to be brought into the light, acknowledged and dealt with. Much is expected of those to whom much has been entrusted,

This is a disturbing book. Shocking in places. Nevertheless, there is a main emphasis in the power of God to intervene whenever a shepherd is caught battering a sheep. That these two women are still devoted Christians is testimony to an almighty, loving God and to the strength and determination of the human spirit that rests in His love. The gates of hell did not prevail!

Absolutely riveting. Don't miss it!

There's a pretty dynamic line where a severe mental condition can be interpreted as evolving from preternatural influence, this book helps to clarify that line. The practice of assumption rather than diagnosis can lead to devastating consequences, and once performed cannot be undone.

Exorcising the Unpossessed edition by Janet Cooper Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews

I think the book could have been organized better and I would have liked to know more about what Janet's husband and family went through and what they thought of the Glynns and Vic.
Instead of really telling the account of events, the author preached, prepared a bible study and showed her vast vocabulary of large words. I honestly expected more. Demonic possession and mental illness? Sounds interesting but left me incredibly lacking. The story was interesting but MS. COOPER excessively quoted the bible throughout the book. Also,it lacked depth.
Finally someone has written a book that happens to a lot of Christians who visit "Deliverance" ministries. Well written and eye opening. Please read before you visit a "Deliverance" ministry. This book may just save your spiritual life. Thank you Janet Cooper.
